    Would this be false trace?

No, it was extra creamy. To tell you the truth, I have been questionning my lye. The first two batches I did something like a 5-7% superfat but they were really oily after setting. The second batch had a thin layer of oil resting on the top of the hardened soap. This batch had a 1% lye...

    "Room temperature" method

I posted a new topic about my third batch using the room temp method. It's a new topic, but then I thought I'd post the link to it here so whoever's following this thread could get the update. It's about false trace. http://www.soapmakingforum.com/forum/vi ... hp?t=25331

    Would this be false trace?

Hi, I've done my third batch so far. The first batch was 100% olive oil and the second was something like 70% OO and 23§ coconut and 7% castor. So (mainly) soft oils for both. Both batches only ever got to thin trace after about 10 to 15 minutes with the stick blender. Oh yeah: I soap at...

Recipe for first batch with limited oils

I thought I'd come back and tell you what I used and how it went: I made a first batch of 100% olive oil. I discounted the water to 31% of oils and dissolved one tablespoon of sugar in the water before adding the lye (I read that 1 TBSP sugar per pound of oils increases bubbles). I used a...

Small tip to avoid splashes while mixing

It wasn't really splattering. Just a couple of teeny tiny droplets once or twice if the soap got too carried away with the blender (it would whirl inside the jar). I really think it was normal, it just got me nervous, so on my second go I made it foolproof in a "better safe than sorry" manner.

Small tip to avoid splashes while mixing

Hi, I've done my second batch last night, so I'm still new. Maybe this tip won't be news to anyone nor use to people who make very large batches (you could always adapt it with something else than a zip lock bag). While I was mixing my first batch, small splutters would jump out of the jug I...

this might be a silly question...

Now THIS might be a silly question... but why does metal make soap more prone to DOS?

super-duper-fat & thoughts on baby wipe solutions

I was wondering what happens if you use a superduperfat percentage. Like a 50-60% superfat? (I have no idea what the maximum usually is) I was thinking about the dixie drops or baby bits wipe solution. They are small cubes of god knows what (dixie drops says to be made of shea butter, aloe...

    "Room temperature" method

Yeah... it's frustrating! But oh well, I just have to try to forget about it until next week. In the event that it would gel in the PVC mold, I put a small amount of the soap in a small silicone mold (muffin type) to try to avoid gel with that one and be able to see the difference. But neither...

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Good to know... Though I still think that it isn't really normal for it to heat up like that (I might have exagerated on the 2 minutes max, it was probably 30 sec-1min max). I'll give it another go and use it no more than 10-15 seconds at a time and see what that does.

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Well, I would turn it on for 20 sec, then turn it off again for some 5-10 seconds. I did something like that all along. I would say that the longest time with it on continuously would be one or two minutes. I had read that it helps avoid overheating the motor and I feared just that from the...

    "Room temperature" method

Ok, so I got the blender and scale and I just couldn't see myself waiting another week or more until I go in town to get the coconut oil, so I decided to do a first go with 100% olive oil to make castile soap. I placed the oil in my jug and set that in a bucket of hot tap water for a while...

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Ok, so I ended up getting the cheapest available (12 USD). It's a 170W blender in one solid block (end not detachable) and only one speed. I used it today for my first batch of soap (castile). The blender got really hot while using it. I used it uncontinuously for 15 minutes and at the end...

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Just a fun hack: I told my hubby that I was going to buy a stick blender and he asked how much it would cost. He was like "eh, that's pricey". I replied (jokingly) that he has all HIS toys to play with (speaking about his tools - he was out in the back building a desk and shelves for the...

Yup, I like the rag idea too.

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Maybe, but it'll just make for a longer wait (I'm sort of impatient having read so much on the subject, can't wait any longer). I'm going to check a larger supermarket on Friday, so I might get one then.

Oh yeah, or just leave it out to scent the whole house for a couple of days!

Stick blender, advice & help me choose

Today I went to town to see the prices for stick blenders. I was almost going to leave with the cheapest when I noticed the difference in Watts between them all... The cheapest is 200W and the most expensive is 600W. So I wondered if the watts affect the spead and if so if the 200W would do the...

    Cleaning up after soap making

How do you clean up after making soap? This seems kind of like a silly question but I bet there are loads of little things that experienced soapmakers do to make cleaning up more thorough and safe. On all websites/videos I've checked out, they all tell you how to make the soap, but leave you...

    "Room temperature" method

Thank you for clarifying. I kind of had the impression that there were two different ways.
